The Lineup

All of our games operate on quarters.  We have a change machine and ATM on site for your convenience.

At Maine Silverball Tavern you will find pinball machines from all eras.

Electromechanical (EM) machines from the 60s and 70s utilize old school technology with coils, switches, relays, and mechanical score reels.   EM games run and sound different from the new technology and have no solid state electronics found in newer games.  You can identify an EM by the sound of bells and chimes, and the spinning mechanical score reels.

In the late 70s, pinball machines started utilizing Solid State (SS) technology with microprocessors, circuit boards, and digital displays. Sound and speech were very limited, and scoring was purely a digital display with no capabilities other than numbers. The first game to utilize speech didn't come along until 1979 with Williams Gorgar, and it's quite comical compared to today's technology, but still a fun flip!

The 80's continued to evolve pinball with new sounds, voice callouts, multi-ball, and alphanumeric technology, where score displays could display numbers and letters, such as Williams Taxi and F-14 Tomcat!

Starting in the 90s, pinball technology made huge advances with Dot Matrix Displays (DMD) that featured on screen animation, more toys, light shows, music, ramps, and the list goes on! This era of pinball was such a hit, the DMD era continued until 2014 and was replaced by a video screen. The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor displays full color images and graphics, fully emerging the player and spectator in the game.

Come check out and play each era of pinball history at Maine Silverball Tavern!
